Taipei
County's Jioufen,
known for its view overlooking
the northeastern coast,
recently had new signs in English,
Japanese and Korean installed
as part of an effort to make it
more friendly to foreign visitors.
Michella Jade Weng reports.##
Whether
you're shopping for wooden slippers
or eating taro treats in Jioufen,
you're likely to hear store owners
calling out in different languages,
especially Korean or Japanese,
because more than half the foreign
visitors here are from Korea and
Japan.
But how about their English?
Let's
see how good their English really
is.
Let's give them a test. Excuse
me, what kind of tea do you have
here?
Tea
shop employee
We have Dongding, Gaoshan, Alishan
and Dongfangmeiren and Puer tea
and Jasmine tea.
And
to make Jioufen more tourist-friendly,
the Tourism Bureau's newly installed
signs in Japanese,
Korean and English and put in
a new public announcement system.
New
multilingual maps,
PA system and signs, Jioufen's
trying hard to keep its foreign
visitors happy.
