As
the first city built in Taiwan,
Tainan has some of the oldest
buildings in the country,
like Fort Zeelandia and Chikan
Tower,
both first built more than three
centuries ago by the Dutch.
This week, Michella Jade Weng
travels to Tainan, to look at
the beginnings of modern Taiwan,
and of course, to try some local
delicacies.##
The
very first capital of Taiwan,
Tainan is especially rich in historical
sites.
This
is Fort Zeelandia,
first built by the Dutch over
370 years ago to protect its trade
routes with Japan.
I
wanted to see some of our historical
buildings and understand the history,
said this visitor. It's quite
open here,
and there are lots of things to
take pictures of, like those canons.
This
is the oldest commercial avenue
in Taiwan,
Yanpingjie. These days, you can
find here local sweets and breads,
like this "pong bianh,"
which literally means "puffy
bread."
Next,
follow us to Chikan Tower.
It's another of Taiwan¡¦s most
important historical sites that
has been through the hands of
the Dutch, Chinese, Japanese and
KMT governments.

What makes Tainan so attractive
are the historical buildings,
and the local food here is quite
famous too.
When
you come to southern Taiwan.
Besides the lovely Tainan and
its historical sites.
There are plenty of other places
to visit as well
After
a stroll through historic Tainan
City,
you can go for an eco-tour at
Tainan County's Chigu Lagoon and
then head to Kaohsiung,
where the beautifully lit Love
River may just make you fall in
love, with southern Taiwan.
